Elephant & Castle Food Hall Secures Extended Future Amid Housing Development Plans

A food hall located in south London is set to remain operational until late 2026, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), despite plans for the construction of new residential units.

Mercato Metropolitano, which has been serving the community from a repurposed paper factory in Elephant & Castle for nine years, is scheduled for demolition following the approval of the Borough Triangle development by Southwark councillors in March.

The proposed housing project will consist of nearly 900 residences housed in tower blocks reaching heights of up to 44 stories.

A representative for the food market, which features 40 independent vendors, emphasized that “contrary to recent misinformation,” the market will stay open and hinted at “exciting developments in store” for the upcoming year.

The LDRS reports that the market will continue its normal operations throughout the next year, with additional updates regarding the future of the site anticipated early next year.

Berkeley Homes, the developer approved for the site, previously indicated that there could be opportunities for as many as 12 vendors to temporarily relocate to a nearby space while construction takes place.

Planning documents from Southwark Council show that Berkeley Homes has pledged to offer the remaining stallholders a relocation assistance package.

The development plans also encompass a new office building, versatile café or retail facilities, and a community center, which is expected to be utilized by a Latin American organization. Additionally, the project aims to create 1,780 square meters of public space.

In accordance with the council’s policy, the development will include 35% affordable housing.
