A bus driver who caused the death of a nine-year-old girl while she was cycling on the pavement, having fallen asleep at the wheel under the influence of drugs, has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Ada Bicakci succumbed to her injuries in the hospital in August of the previous year, just two days following the incident in Bexleyheath, southeast London, which resulted in her suffering “catastrophic injuries.”
Martin Asolo-Ogugua, aged 23, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday after admitting to charges of dangerous driving resulting in Ada’s death and driving while impaired by drugs in April.
Residing in Southwark, southeast London, Asolo-Ogugua failed a drug test conducted at the scene, having consumed cannabis the night prior.
CCTV footage captured Asolo-Ogugua operating the bus with Ada on the pavement before he fell asleep, causing the vehicle to veer across the road and collide with her family.
In a statement, Ada’s father, Bora Bicakci, expressed that his life was “shattered beyond repair,” stating, “This tragedy occurred under my watch, reflecting a father’s ultimate failure. My life has been turned upside down, and the very foundations of my family have crumbled.”
He continued, “My beloved Ada. Our appreciation is insufficient to convey our gratitude for you. We will honor your legacy through significant actions. You will always be remembered.”
Senior Crown Prosecutor Miranda Jollie referred to Asolo-Ogugua as “reckless and utterly selfish.”
Ada, a Turkish-British girl, resided in Bexleyheath with her family and was a passionate gymnast and swimmer. She attended a local primary school where she was recognized as a “popular and joyful student.”
In a testament to her spirit, her organs were donated, leading to life-saving assistance for six other individuals, as her family previously shared.
Asolo-Ogugua has also been disqualified from driving for a period of seven years.
