Constructive Progress Marked in Trilateral UAE Talks, Kremlin Indicates More Efforts Needed

The Kremlin announced on Monday that the trilateral discussions in the United Arab Emirates involving delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. were held in a “constructive manner,” but it also noted that much work lies ahead.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed journalists, “It would be unwise to anticipate any major outcomes from these initial meetings. Nonetheless, the mere fact that these discussions have commenced positively should be viewed as a good sign. However, we still have a substantial amount of work to do.”

The two-day conference in Abu Dhabi, which took place on Friday and Saturday, represented the first direct discussions between Russian and Ukrainian officials concerning a new peace initiative encouraged by U.S. President Donald Trump to resolve the nearly four-year-long conflict.

A U.S. official indicated that the trilateral talks are scheduled to continue on February 1.

Peskov also remarked, “I wouldn’t characterize the atmosphere as friendly. That’s unlikely at this point in time. However, for meaningful negotiations, it’s essential to engage in constructive dialogue.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also spoke positively about the discussions, stating earlier that “a lot of topics were covered, and it’s significant that the dialogues were constructive.”
