Community Memories Come to Life: Walthamstows Six-Storey Mural Transforms Local Heritage into Animated Art

A towering six-storey mural has been revealed on a residential building in east London, drawing inspiration from the memories of its residents.

Dubbed the Priory Court Unity Banner, this artwork in Walthamstow was crafted by street artist INSA in collaboration with local community members, who shared their personal stories through workshops aimed at honoring the area’s heritage.

The expansive mural reflects the community’s historical ties to the sewing industry and the artist William Morris, acknowledges the multicultural fabric of its residents, and celebrates themes of nature and togetherness.

Designed as an “augmented reality” piece, the mural animates like a moving GIF when viewed through a specialized application.

The mural’s design concepts were developed through extensive consultations with residents, including in-person interviews, focus groups, and collaborative workshops across the estate.

Young participants had the opportunity to learn INSA’s painting techniques, while some older community members created appliqué elements that were incorporated into the mural.

Mustafa, a budding mural assistant, expressed how meaningful the project was for him. “I gained a wealth of knowledge and skills I wasn’t familiar with before,” he shared. He also noted that “everyone smiles” when they gaze upon the mural.

Ibrahim, another contributor to the piece, expressed his belief that it would help strengthen community bonds. “I find the mural absolutely stunning; you can see it tells a beautiful story just by looking at it.”
