Law enforcement officials have apprehended the CEO and chief technician of a chairlift company following a fatal incident in the North Caucasus region of Kabardino-Balkaria, as announced by investigators on Monday.

Last week, a single-seat chairlift on the slopes of Mount Elbrus, the tallest mountain in both Russia and Europe, came off its support roller, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others.

This chairlift, operated by MKD Elbrus, was part of a Soviet-era system that transported tourists and climbers to a base camp situated approximately 3,700 meters (12,140 feet) above sea level.

In the aftermath of the tragic event, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which handles serious crimes, launched a criminal investigation into potential safety violations.

The CEO and chief technician of MKD Elbrus were taken into custody as part of the inquiry, though it remains unclear whether they will face specific charges.

As the investigation continues, access to the chairlift line has been restricted by police.
