Benchmark Battle: Comparing NVIDIA RTX 5070 and AMD RX 9070 Across 20 Games

The publication Tom’s Hardware has conducted an extensive benchmark comparison of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 graphics cards. Both models debuted in early 2025, retailing for a suggested price of $549, and are positioned as mid-range options balancing similar performance levels.

The testing involved assessing both graphics cards across 20 different video games, varying the graphical settings used.

At the base resolution of 1920×1080, the performance of the RTX 5070 and RX 9070 was found to be equivalent. Each chip achieved an average of over 100 frames per second in contemporary titles, delivering satisfactory performance. However, in certain scenarios, the AMD chip outperforming its competitor by 30% in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, while the NVIDIA card had a 28% advantage in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.

In the more advanced resolution of 2560×1440, the RX 9070 surpassed its NVIDIA counterpart slightly, showing an average advantage of 8.2%. However, when it came to ray tracing tests, there was virtually no difference in performance. At this higher resolution, overall performance took a slight dip, attributed to ultra settings and the increased system requirements of the latest games.

At the highest resolution of 3840×1920, the RX 9070 emerged as the clear winner, outperforming the RTX 5070 by 11%, including in ray tracing scenarios. In some titles, the AMD graphics card even exceeded its rival by as much as 30%, particularly in The Last of Us Part I and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

Both graphics cards were deemed unsuitable for high-fidelity 4K gaming, with some titles causing frame rates to drop to as low as 20 frames per second.

Tom’s Hardware concluded that the RTX 5070 and RX 9070 are excellent options in the mid-range graphics card market. They are well-suited for gamers intending to play at 1080p or 1440p with somewhat reduced graphical settings.

Even though the RX 9070 came out on top in most tests, the NVIDIA chip offers more advanced technologies, such as the DLSS upscaling for sharper visuals and frame generation capabilities that can significantly boost FPS. This makes it challenging to declare a definitive winner in this comparison.
