A residential property in north-east London, believed to have served as a cannabis cultivation site, has suffered significant destruction due to a fire that broke out overnight, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
Twelve fire engines and approximately 80 firefighters were dispatched to the mid-terraced home in Walthamstow just before 03:00 BST.
The fire ravaged most of the ground floor, half of the first floor, and the roof of the two-storey residence located on Knebworth Avenue.
The LFB cautioned that fires at cannabis farms can be “particularly hazardous” due to the unsafe electrical wiring used by criminals to unlawfully power the cultivation of the plants.
A representative from the brigade noted, “These operations are often situated on upper floors or in attics, which allows a fire to spread quickly, resulting in roof destruction and potential harm to adjacent properties.”
Additionally, firefighters may face increased risks when responding to these incidents, due to poor wiring and potential traps set in some of these locations.
The LFB emphasized the importance of recognizing the “key indicators” of a cannabis operation and urging the public to notify the police.
Firefighters from the surrounding north-east London area aided in controlling the blaze, which was managed by around 05:00 BST.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
The BBC has reached out to the Metropolitan Police for further comment.
