Freehaus Selected to Design Lasting Tribute at Grenfell Tower Site as Community Reflects on Tragedy

An architect has been appointed to create a memorial on the Grenfell Tower site.

The west London structure, which was the scene of a tragic fire in June 2017 that resulted in the loss of 72 lives, is currently undergoing a careful dismantling process, being taken down one floor at a time.

The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission (GTMC) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have selected Freehaus from a shortlist of five contenders. Over 25 proposals were submitted for this memorial project.

A representative from the commission expressed that the selection marks a significant step toward realizing a “striking, appropriate, and enduring tribute to our 72 dearly missed individuals, as well as our Grenfell community, whose lives were irrevocably altered by this horrific event.”

The final design is anticipated to be revealed in mid-2027, coinciding with an expected two-year timeline for the tower’s demolition.

Community representatives from GTMC remarked, “We are reassured that the right team has been chosen to accompany us on this journey.”

They emphasized, “To create a memorial that genuinely embodies our community’s aspirations, needs, and memories, the ongoing participation of bereaved families, survivors, and those residing in close proximity to Grenfell Tower is essential.”

“We will always remember.”

Directors of Freehaus, Jonathan Hagos and Tom Bell, expressed their gratitude for the opportunity.

“During the past year, we have had the privilege of listening to the stories of those most affected by this tragedy, and we deeply appreciate everyone who has shared the profound effects of that night with us.”

Freehaus, an award-winning architecture firm, has been involved in a variety of projects across London, including The Africa Centre in Southwark, three libraries in Ealing, a youth facility in Wood Green, and the renovation of the RIBA headquarters.

Founded in 2012, the firm has also earned accolades for projects throughout Europe.
