For those who have survived sexual violence, even standard medical procedures can become overwhelming. Smear tests, which are meant to safeguard health, can inadvertently contribute to re-traumatization. To address this issue, a clinic in east London, now celebrating its 10th anniversary, was established specifically for the needs of survivors of rape and sexual assault.

Natalie experienced anxiety about undergoing cervical screening after her relationship with her body changed following her rape in August 2021.

“When people say it alters your life, that statement holds true,” she remarked.

“For me, it felt akin to dying, which is why I believe the connection to surviving is so significant and needs to be emphasized.”

She noted that while it becomes easier with time, discussing and dealing with the aftermath remains challenging.

“Sometimes you encounter a triggering situation unexpectedly, and it can lead to nightmares.”

The assault had caused her to hesitate regarding cervical screening.

“My fear was that seeking this healthcare would feel like experiencing rape all over again.

“I was incredibly anxious that it might lead to self-harm or negatively impact my mental health, and I aimed to alleviate that concern.”

Her apprehensions subsided when she discovered My Body Back, a specialized health clinic in Mile End Hospital catering to individuals who have faced sexual violence.

“At My Body Back, we talked about various options,” she explained.

“For instance, I had the choice to handle the speculum myself during the cervical screening, ensuring that I wasn’t touched by anyone else.

“I also opted for the appointment to take place in the dark, which I found beneficial because bright lights can be overstimulating when I feel particularly vulnerable.”

Prior to the appointment, a psychologist met with Natalie to determine what she needed to feel at ease during the procedure.

“I felt entirely supported in expressing my needs. This made the experience non-retraumatizing,” she stated.

This experience also contributed positively to her ongoing recovery journey.

“It assists in re-establishing a connection with your body after experiencing sexual violence.”

“Even seeing my body could be a trigger, as it served as a reminder of where he had been, so accessing services like this can help me reclaim ownership of my body.”

The clinic was the first of its kind in the UK when it opened in 2015.

It was founded by Pavan Amara, who had been a victim of rape as a teenager.

In addition to cervical screenings, the clinic also provides testing for sexually transmitted infections and limited maternity care.

It operates monthly and is available to survivors from across the nation.

Funding primarily comes from NHS England, along with donations to the My Body Back charity.

A second clinic in Glasgow was launched in 2018, with aspirations for more clinics to open in the future.

“Cervical screening is crucial in the prevention of cervical cancer,” said Dr. Rebecca Lissmann, a My Body Back clinician.

“The screening procedure is an intimate examination and can be deeply distressing for some survivors of sexual violence, which underscores the importance of this service.”

Dr. Felicity Saunders, the lead clinical psychologist, stated: “At My Body Back, we prioritize making the environment safe for each individual from the moment they arrive, ensuring they receive the time and attention they deserve.”
