FSB Detains Man in Far East for Alleged Treason Linked to Military Intelligence Transfer to Ukraine

On Wednesday, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of an individual in the Amur region of the Far East on charges of treason, alleging that he assisted Ukraine.

According to the FSB, the suspect is accused of sending funds to a pro-Ukrainian group that is prohibited in Russia, as well as providing information regarding military train movements along the Trans-Siberian Railway towards conflict areas.

The authorities did not disclose the man’s name, only indicating that he was born in 1977.

In footage released by state news outlets, the apprehended individual stated that he had informed the unidentified Ukrainian entity about the movement of military equipment through Telegram while employed during the summer and fall of 2023.

His face was obscured in the video, and he acknowledged knowing that the Russian government had classified the organization as “extremist” in 2017 and “terrorist” in 2021, implying that it might refer to the Right Sector paramilitary group.

He is facing charges of treason, financing extremist activities, and involvement in an extremist organization, which could result in life imprisonment if he is convicted. Following his arrest, he has been placed in pre-trial detention.

The FSB further asserted that the individual was recruited by a member of the pro-Ukrainian organization through Telegram.

Additionally, the FSB accused Ukrainian intelligence agencies of stepping up efforts to recruit Russians online via Telegram and WhatsApp, urging citizens to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
