Tragic Discovery: Body of Chechen Domestic Violence Survivor Found in Yerevan

The body of a missing Chechen woman, who is believed to have escaped domestic abuse in Chechnya and moved to Armenia, has been discovered in a rented apartment in Yerevan, according to Armenian police on Monday.

The woman, named Ayshat Baimuradova and aged 23, had been unaccounted for since Friday, raising fears about a potential forced return.

Baimuradova was last seen on Wednesday, when activists reported that she had gone out to meet a friend she met through Instagram.

Activist Daniil Chebykin alerted others to Baimuradova’s disappearance, suggesting that her Instagram friend had followers tied to Chechen authorities.

“As far as I understand, it was a setup,” an anonymous acquaintance told the investigative outlet The Insider, dismissing the idea that Baimuradova may have taken her own life.

It was reported that Baimuradova had been living with friends in Yerevan after fleeing Chechnya with assistance from a human rights organization focused on helping women from the North Caucasus.

Russian human rights organizations have consistently brought attention to the problem of domestic violence against women in the traditionally conservative Chechnya.

The Armenian police stated that they are investigating the circumstances of Baimuradova’s death.
