Outrage Erupts Over Womens Exclusion from Charity Run in East London: Calls for Investigation

The Secretary for Communities expressed his “horror and dismay” over the exclusion of women from a fundraising run held in a park in East London.

According to the East London Mosque, which organized the event, hundreds participated in the 5 km (3.1 mile) race at Victoria Park on Sunday.

Promoted online as an “inclusive” event welcoming runners and supporters of all ages and abilities, the race was open to “men, boys of all ages, and girls under 12.”

MP Steve Reed deemed it completely unacceptable for women to be forbidden from the run, and stated that the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) would scrutinize potential breaches of laws or regulations.

In an interview on LBC Radio, Reed remarked: “I came across these reports… and I felt just as horrified as anyone else. It is entirely unacceptable for women to be prohibited from participating in a public fun run while men are allowed to take part.”

He expressed confidence that the equalities watchdog would be aware of the situation and that appropriate consequences would ensue.

Reed further noted, “On a personal note, I found it appalling. We cannot allow a scenario in this country where men can participate in activities that are denied to women. It is something we must not accept.”

The annual event raises significant funds for various causes both locally and internationally, benefiting projects such as youth initiatives, food banks, and refugee support, in addition to global humanitarian efforts.

Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman commended all participants, particularly “the young ones, the elderly, and the community at large for their involvement today,” as stated on the event’s website.

The council has reached out to the mosque for “urgent clarification” following reports of gender and age restrictions.

While the EHRC is reportedly looking into the matter, it has yet to confirm this officially.

An EHRC representative mentioned that all complaints are thoroughly reviewed and noted that specific exceptions under equality law may apply to charities and organizations with religious beliefs, which might allow for single-sex events.

A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets Council clarified, “This was an independently organized event held in Victoria Park, not overseen by the council. As with many local charitable events, it utilized the park space. We are committed to ensuring that leisure and sporting activities in Tower Hamlets are inclusive and accessible to everyone.”

Last weekend’s run marked the 12th annual Muslim Charity Run.

The BBC has reached out for comments from East London Mosque and the London Muslim Centre.
