On Wednesday, Russia’s FSB security service announced the arrest of an African national in the southern city of Astrakhan on charges of espionage for Ukraine.

The individual, who is only identified as a citizen of a country in North Africa, was legally registered as a foreign resident in Astrakhan, according to the FSB.

Authorities alleged that the man engaged with Ukrainian intelligence operatives online, subsequently collecting and transmitting intelligence related to military facilities and critical infrastructure in Astrakhan for potential use against Russia.

He faces charges of espionage, which could lead to a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

A video released by Russian state news agencies depicted masked FSB officers escorting the man, with his identity obscured, as he was taken in and out of government buildings.

It remains uncertain how the individual has responded to the charges or whether his country’s diplomats are providing him with assistance. Ukraine has not yet released any statement regarding these accusations.

In its announcement, the FSB highlighted the case as evidence of Ukraine’s purported attempts to recruit spies in Russia via messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.
