Beatles Through McCartneys Lens: Rare Photos from Beatlemania Era Unveiled in London Exhibit

This month, central London will host an exhibition featuring photographs captured by Paul McCartney during the early days of Beatlemania.

Titled *Rearview Mirror: Liverpool–London–Paris*, the display will take place at the Gagosian Gallery on Davies Street from August 28 until October 4.

The images, shot with McCartney’s 35mm Pentax camera, offer an intimate glimpse of the Beatles as their fame began to extend beyond Liverpool, just before their inaugural trip to the United States.

These black-and-white photographs highlight pivotal yet overlooked moments in the band’s journey, ranging from their UK tour in 1963 to their landmark three-week performance as headliners at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, according to the Gagosian.

Entry to the exhibition is free and includes a self-portrait of McCartney captured in the mirror of the attic room at his then-girlfriend Jane Asher’s family home, where he conceived the melody for “Yesterday.”

Additionally, the collection features behind-the-scenes images from performances at venues like the Lewisham Odeon, London Palladium, and Finsbury Park Astoria, along with moments just before their flight to New York.

These photographs have been remastered from original negatives and contact sheets that were believed to have been lost for over fifty years, with some presented in their original contact sheet format rather than as standalone images.
