London Underground Staff to Launch Week-Long Strike Amid Ongoing Pay and Safety Disputes

Starting Friday, September 5, the RMT union has announced a series of rolling strikes across the London Underground (LU) that will last for seven days.

These strikes are a response to management’s refusal to address union requests concerning issues such as pay, management of fatigue, severe shift patterns, and a reduction in weekly working hours. Additionally, the management has not fulfilled prior commitments made to employees, according to the RMT.

Eddie Dempsey, General Secretary of the RMT, stated, “The issues of fatigue and extreme shift schedules pose significant risks to our members’ health and wellbeing, and LU management has inadequately tackled these problems for years.”

Transport for London has been contacted for their input on the situation.

On Thursday, the RMT accused management of adopting a “dismissive approach,” which has led to “widespread anger and distrust” among employees.

Workers from various job grades will participate in the industrial action at staggered times as part of the ongoing strike strategy.

In a related matter concerning pay and working conditions, employees on the Docklands Light Railway will also engage in strikes during the week starting September 7.

Dempsey further emphasized, “The RMT is committed to pursuing discussions with LU management to explore the possibility of a revised proposal in pursuit of a negotiated resolution.”
