The London Mayor has been exonerated regarding the acceptance of complimentary tickets valued at approximately £3,000 to a Taylor Swift concert last August.
An independent inquiry found that Sir Sadiq Khan did not violate the Greater London Authority (GLA) code of conduct and acted with an appropriate level of prudence.
Following the revelation that the tickets were supplied by LS Events, a GLA contractor, the Conservative Party requested an investigation from the GLA’s monitoring officer, Rory McKenna.
A representative for Sir Sadiq Khan stated, “Any gifts received by the Mayor are disclosed in an open and transparent manner. In this situation, there was a minor administrative mistake that was promptly rectified.”
Sir Sadiq attended the concert with family in a VIP box on August 15, 2024, during the pop star’s sold-out performances at Wembley Stadium last summer, accompanied by five other City Hall personnel, including two senior officials.
In January, Mr. McKenna concluded that there would be no further inquiry into three specific allegations: the late declaration of the tickets, their perceived undervaluation, and the fact that they were issued by a contractor.
However, he did refer the matter to an independent investigator to assess whether the mayor had exercised “an appropriate level of caution.” The recent investigation has now fully cleared the mayor of any misconduct.
Susan Hall, the leader of the City Hall Conservatives who initially raised concerns, expressed her disappointment with the outcome of the investigation, noting, “Ultimately, it will be up to Londoners to judge whether the Mayor acted correctly in accepting complimentary tickets from a company engaged with the GLA for substantial sums.”
She added, “This investigation has highlighted the nature of the relationship between the Mayor and businesses that contract with the GLA.”
The mayor has clarified that he “does not participate in the procurement process for GLA events or the bidding for these contracts.”
