An Estonian court has convicted a journalist with previous connections to Russian state media, sentencing her to six years in prison for treason.

The Harju County District Court determined that Svetlana Burceva had engaged in collaboration with a reserve officer from Russia’s FSB, participating in activities that jeopardized Estonia’s “independence and sovereignty.”

“The sentence imposed was six years of imprisonment,” the court stated in its announcement. Burceva, also known as Burtseva in Russian outlets, has a period of 30 days to file an appeal.

The court revealed that Burceva and FSB reserve officer Roman Romachev intended to disseminate materials that would promote Russian foreign and security policy. The book they collaboratively authored on hybrid warfare was characterized by the court as “a propagandistic effort lacking genuine independent analysis.”

Burceva, who acquired Estonian citizenship in 1994, has been associated with Estonian websites linked to Russia’s Rossiya Segodnya media group since 2017.

She was taken into custody on February 28, 2024, and the Estonian court noted on Wednesday that her time spent in detention would be credited against her sentence.
