Gas Supply Nearly Restored to 3,000 North London Homes After Major Water Incident

Gas service is being restored to approximately 3,000 residences and businesses in north London that lost their supply due to water infiltrating the gas pipes.

A ruptured water main inundated the gas infrastructure in the Muswell Hill region on January 13, according to Cadent, the organization responsible for the UK’s National Gas Emergency Service.

Vicky Grieve, the network director for Cadent, expressed her gratitude to the community, acknowledging that the situation has been “frustrating” and that being without gas is inconvenient. However, she indicated that “the end is in sight.”

Over 50,000 liters of water have been extracted from the gas system, and technicians have been reinstating service to affected properties.

Ms. Grieve noted that it is essential for homeowners to be present or to leave a key with a neighbor so that engineers can access the remaining residences.

She further explained, “If you are unavailable, no need to worry; we will attempt to visit your home three times. If we are still unable to enter, we will leave a card with our contact details so you can reach out to schedule a ‘purge and relight’ appointment at a suitable time.”

She emphasized the necessity of allowing Cadent to turn the gas supply back on and discouraged residents from attempting to do it themselves.
