Improvements aimed at enhancing safety at one of London’s most hazardous intersections are set to commence at the end of this month.
The roundabouts located at both ends of Lambeth Bridge will be replaced with traffic signal-controlled junctions.
In addition, waterproofing measures and repairs will be undertaken to extend the life of the Grade II-listed bridge.
This project will necessitate a variety of full and partial closures along the bridge, according to Transport for London (TfL).
Data from TfL indicates that the northern junction of Lambeth Bridge is the most perilous site in the city in terms of bicycle accidents.
Between 1 September 2021 and 31 August 2024, cyclists were involved in 22 out of the 31 accidents that occurred at the roundabouts.
A complete closure for southbound traffic is planned from 10 February to 15 December 2025, although access for pedestrians and cyclists will largely remain intact.
The plans also include the addition of a dedicated bicycle lane on the bridge and new pedestrian crossing points.
This will link to the existing Cycleway 8 on the northern side of the bridge and Cycleway 5 on the southern side.
TfL has noted that nearby roads and other river crossings are likely to experience increased traffic, prompting travelers to consider alternate routes.
