Two small primates at the London Zoo are on the mend following dental procedures.
The endangered pygmy slow loris named Ernest and the black-capped squirrel monkey known as Nuka were taken to the zoo’s veterinary clinic after earlier examinations revealed potential gum infections.
Veterinarian Stefan Saverimuttu remarked, “Ernest and Nuka were exceptional patients. Their dental surgeries went exceedingly well.”
This development coincides with the zoo’s Vets In Action week, held during the school holidays, where children with tickets have the opportunity to learn about caring for animals saved from illegal wildlife trafficking and to practice veterinary skills themselves.
The zoo announced that Dr. Rachel Perry, a specialized veterinary dentist, was enlisted to provide optimal care for the animals. Both Ernest and Nuka received general anesthesia for their dental assessments, allowing veterinarians to conduct a comprehensive health evaluation while the dental work was performed.
After performing examinations and X-rays, the veterinary team identified the issues: Ernest had a broken tooth hidden beneath his gum, leading to swelling, while two of Nuka’s teeth—a canine and an incisor—required extraction.
Once the problematic teeth were removed, the vets sutured the gums of both Ernest and Nuka, after which they were returned to their keepers.
Both animals have been prescribed anti-inflammatory medication post-surgery and are under close observation.
Saverimuttu noted, “Ernest’s recovery has significantly improved now that the problematic tooth is gone.
“Nuka seemed a bit unsteady after waking from anesthesia, but he quickly resumed his playful behavior just minutes later.
“While his mouth heals, he’s been gravitating towards softer foods, which suits him just fine—he has always had a preference for gentler fare.”
He further mentioned that since the procedure, Ernest has been able to access a new area of his enclosure to meet a companion.
“The pair has been given a breeding recommendation, which gives them the chance to contribute significantly to the European breeding program aimed at supporting this endangered species.”
