Russias Rosaviatsia Imposes Airspace Ban in Middle East Amid Rising Tensions Following Israeli Strikes on Iran

Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, has prohibited the country’s airlines from flying over several Middle Eastern nations following recent Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

“In light of the significant escalation in the Middle East, Rosaviatsia has issued a directive advising Russian airlines against conducting flights to or from airports in Israel and Iran,” the agency announced via Telegram. This also includes restrictions on entering airspace over Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Iran.

These restrictions will be in place until 2:59 a.m. Moscow time on June 26, according to Rosaviatsia.

“This measure was implemented to guarantee the safety of flights, which is our highest priority,” the statement further explained.

The flight cancellations were triggered by extensive military operations conducted by the Israel Defense Forces targeting numerous sites throughout Iran, including its nuclear facilities, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking military personnel.

Previously, Russian airlines such as Aeroflot and Red Wings had canceled flights to Iran and Israel due to safety risks.

Aeroflot indicated that it had to modify the schedules of several flights and mentioned that some routes in the region would also be affected. Flights to destinations such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, and the Maldives are now being rerouted through Pakistani airspace, the airline noted.

These adjustments will remain in effect until the situation becomes stable.

Ben Gurion Airport in Israel has been closed indefinitely as the country remains on high alert due to concerns over possible Iranian retaliation.

Jordan, which shares a border with Israel, announced on Friday that it had shut down its airspace.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized the overnight operation, termed “Rising Lion,” as an effort to “mitigate the Iranian threat to Israel’s very existence,” adding that the operation would require “many days.”
