Legendary 1977 Star Wars Film Returns to the Big Screen: A Rare Screening at BFIs Film on Film Festival

This summer in London, the iconic 1977 release of Star Wars will be screened on the big screen, marking the first public showing of the original film in many years.

As part of the British Film Institute (BFI)’s Film on Film festival, the classic sci-fi film will be presented on June 12.

According to the BFI, this original cut of the film is seldom showcased publicly since the release of George Lucas’ special editions in the 1990s, which modified certain story elements and introduced additional CGI characters.

Currently, only the revised versions are accessible on official streaming services and Blu-ray, making opportunities to view the authentic version quite rare.

James Bell, the senior curator of fiction at the BFI National Archive, remarked that the festival serves as a “genuine exhibition” of the national collection.

“Each print in our program is a distinctive artifact, with its own history, proudly displaying its wear and tear,” he stated.

“They offer us a tangible connection to the past, and we eagerly anticipate audiences experiencing these films.”

“We appreciate the generous backing from philanthropic supporters that has allowed us to create a rich and engaging lineup that keeps Film on Film thriving.”

Fan opinions have long been divided over Lucas’s modifications to critical plot points, such as the introduction of Jabba the Hutt and enhancements to visual effects.

Arguably, the most contentious alteration involved the scene where Harrison Ford’s character Han Solo shoots the bounty hunter Greedo.

In the original cut, Solo shoots first, while the 1997 re-release depicted him acting in self-defense.

Subsequent edits have led to versions where both characters fire simultaneously.

One of the festival’s highlights includes a special screening of the original pilot episode of Twin Peaks, with a presentation by the show’s star, Kyle MacLachlan.

The BFI’s Film on Film Festival is set to occur at the BFI Southbank and BFI Imax from June 12 to 15.
