Amid Winter Struggles, Zelensky Urges Allies for Urgent Air Defense Boost

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed for increased air defense assistance from allies on Sunday, as numerous buildings in Kyiv faced a second consecutive day without heating following Russian attacks.

Throughout the nearly four-year conflict, Russia has targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure, but authorities in Kyiv report that this winter has proven to be the most challenging, with a surge of Russian drones and missiles overwhelming air defense systems during severe cold snaps.

“Just this week, the Russian forces have deployed over 1,700 attack drones, more than 1,380 guided aerial bombs, and 69 missiles of various kinds,” the president stated upon his arrival in Vilnius.

“This underscores the ongoing need for air defense missiles on a daily basis, and we continue to collaborate with both the United States and Europe to enhance our defense capabilities,” he added.

Kyiv has suffered particularly heavy bombardment, leading to the evacuation of half a million residents.

Currently, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 1,676 high-rise residential buildings in Kyiv are lacking heat following the enemy assault on January 24.

The freezing weather and continuous airstrikes have hampered the efforts of repair teams working to restore heating and electricity.

U.S.-facilitated discussions between Russia and Ukraine regarding Washington’s strategy to resolve the conflict concluded without any significant breakthroughs on Saturday.

Nevertheless, Zelensky described the talks as “constructive,” noting that both parties have agreed to reconvene in Abu Dhabi next week.
