Turkish officials have located the body of a Russian swimmer who disappeared during an open-water race in the Bosphorus last summer.

On Thursday, the Russian Consulate General in Istanbul announced that a DNA test confirmed the identity of the body, which was recovered earlier this week near the city’s shoreline, as belonging to Nikolai Svechnikov.

Svechnikov was reported missing on August 24 after he failed to finish the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim, a 6.5-kilometer (4-mile) event organized by the Turkish Olympic Committee. The competition featured over 2,800 swimmers from 81 nations.

On Wednesday, Svechnikov’s mother stated that Turkish authorities had indicated a likelihood of “80% certainty” regarding the identification of the body based on tattoos. The subsequent DNA test corroborated this determination.

Alperen Çakmak, a Turkish attorney representing Svechnikov’s family, informed RIA Novosti this week that he anticipates a heightened urgency in the investigation into the circumstances of the swimmer’s disappearance now that the body has been found.

“We will take all necessary steps to identify anyone responsible for negligence in the organization of this event,” Çakmak declared. “There is a separate legal process concerning compensation, which we will persistingly pursue against the event organizers.”

In August, the Turkish Olympic Committee, the entity responsible for the swimming event, stated that competitors were allotted two hours to finish the course. Those who did not complete the race within the designated time were supposed to be retrieved by the Turkish coast guard.

Some participants voiced their concerns regarding what they called inadequate supervision and a shortage of rescue boats along the route.
