Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed on Sunday his hope that the United States would support the proposal to maintain the current front line in Ukraine during their discussions in Berlin.
Zelensky stated that he was open to “dialogue” in the latest round of critical negotiations with a representative from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration and European leaders about concluding the conflict with Russia.
“The most equitable option would be to ‘remain as we are,’ since it would amount to a ceasefire… I recognize that Russia doesn’t favor this idea, and I would appreciate American backing on this matter,” Zelensky told journalists shortly before his arrival in Berlin.
Trump has been increasingly urging Kyiv to finalize an agreement since he unveiled a plan to end the conflict last month, which received criticism for resonating with Moscow’s requirements, including demands for Ukraine to relinquish territory, including several heavily fortified cities.
This proposal has ignited a wave of diplomatic activity between the United States and Ukraine’s European partners, with officials from Kyiv indicating that they had sent a revised proposal to Washington.
On Sunday, Zelensky mentioned that he had not yet received a reply regarding Ukraine’s modifications, but added, “I am picking up on all the signals and am prepared for the dialogue that will commence today.”
“The Berlin summit is significant. We will be engaging with both American and European representatives… These meetings are happening in Berlin today and tomorrow,” Zelensky noted.
A White House official confirmed to AFP on Friday that Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, would meet with Zelensky and European leaders over the weekend to discuss the status of peace talks.
“The key point is that the plan must be as just as possible, primarily for Ukraine, as Russia instigated the war,” Zelensky emphasized.
This latest initiative to bring an end to the conflict, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since Russia’s invasion in 2022, coincides with reports from Kyiv of new aerial assaults.
The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched 138 drones and one ballistic missile overnight.
As per the regional administration’s statement on Telegram, a Russian drone struck “one of the hospitals in Kherson,” injuring two individuals, including a nurse.
Governor Ivan Fedorov reported that at least 11 people sustained injuries from the strikes in the Zaporizhzhia region.
