Historic Tennis Club Faces Uncertain Future Amid Lease Negotiations

One of the oldest tennis clubs globally is apprehensive about the prospect of permanently shutting down if it fails to secure £90,000 required for a new lease.

In November 2023, Croydon Council revealed its intention to sell Norbury Park Lawn Tennis Club located in Norbury to mitigate its borrowing and debt levels.

Founded in 1889, the club is recognized as an Asset of Community Value, granting it the first opportunity to purchase the lease if it can gather the necessary funds.

The Croydon Council has stated that it is collaborating with the club to provide them with a long-term lease of 999 years, which would offer increased stability.

Chairman Blaise Westmaas remarked, “Families gather here; it’s rented out for community use and there’s a nursery that benefits from the facilities.

“It’s a vital community resource, and we work diligently to uphold that role.

“This significance extends beyond just the members; it impacts the entire community.”

Club member Charmaine Boyd expressed, “I appreciate the warm and friendly atmosphere here. I also enjoy the competitive spirit of the club.”

Khamsay Phommavongsa, who has been a member for over three decades, shared, “I cherish the club; it feels like family.”

Croydon Council clarified, “We are not in the process of selling the Norbury Tennis Club site.

“In October 2024, we reached a preliminary agreement with them, and negotiations are ongoing to finalize the lease.

“We will maintain our communication with the club throughout this period to alleviate any unwarranted concerns.”

The council also noted that it initiated an asset disposal program in 2023 in response to central government directives aimed at selling non-operational assets to curtail borrowing and debt.
