A Metropolitan Police officer has received commendation for his courage after bravely confronting a knife-wielding suspect who was attempting to stab another individual.
PC Morgan Younger was at a gas station on Lee High Road in Lewisham, located in south-east London, when the event occurred around 15:00 GMT on Saturday.
The officer, described as “quick-thinking” and on duty at that moment, managed to bring the suspect to the ground, disarm him, and restrain him while he called for backup.
A man in his 60s was apprehended on allegations of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon, and he remains in custody, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Jon Savell remarked, “This is exemplary behavior from an officer who was patrolling alone, witnessed an extremely violent act occurring, and without a moment’s hesitation, intervened to help.”
He added, “I cannot emphasize enough how proud we at the Met are of his quick response and bravery today. He remained calm and professional, embodying the standards we expect of our officers.”
He expressed confidence that without PC Younger’s timely intervention, the victim could have sustained serious injuries.
PC Younger, part of the South East Command Unit, had stopped at the gas station for a quick drink while on patrol.
Upon arriving at the entrance, he witnessed a man seizing the victim by the throat and attempting to stab him with a sizable knife, as reported by the Met.
The officer engaged the suspect in a struggle as the man continued to wield the knife before successfully disarming him.
PC Younger held the suspect in check for five minutes until additional officers arrived to assist.
The victim, a man in his 40s, fortunately, did not sustain any injuries.
The suspect was later charged with handling stolen property and involvement in the distribution of Class A drugs after a quantity of narcotics was discovered at his residence, according to the Metropolitan Police.
