Headline: Speed Limit Oversight: Elizabeth Line Train Surges to Nearly Double Allowed Speed, Prompting Safety Review

A train on the Elizabeth line experienced a jolt that caused some passengers to stumble after exceeding the speed limit by nearly double, as indicated by a rail safety investigation.

On September 24, 2024, one passenger fell while the Heathrow to Shenfield service passed a signal near Manor Park at a speed of 45 mph (72 km/h), instead of adhering to the advised limit of 25 mph (40 km/h).

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) pointed out that the speed limit sign was “incorrectly placed, inconspicuous, and dirty.” They also noted that the driver felt the jolt was not significant enough to warrant a report.

Howard Smith, the director of the Elizabeth line, expressed regret to passengers aboard the train during this unusual occurrence.

According to the RAIB, a crew member on the train reported the excessive speed in east London. The branch suggested enhancing refresher training for drivers on “infrequently utilized routes” to mitigate knowledge retention issues.

The report further stated that the sign should have been larger, featuring a left-hand direction arrow positioned on the approach to the bridge before the points. At the time of the incident, it was located under the bridge and partially obscured by nearby equipment, making it hard to notice. Additionally, dirt covered the sign, impairing its visibility and legibility.

Mr. Smith verified that they had implemented procedural changes in response to the RAIB’s recommendations.

He further noted, “Our operator, MTREL, promptly alerted the Office of Rail and Road and the RAIB. Safety remains our highest priority, and MTREL has already modified their procedures based on the RAIB’s suggestions.”
