Support workers for domestic abuse victims in East London have voted to initiate an “indefinite” strike in response to proposals that they believe may jeopardize the safety of those they serve.
Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs) associated with the charity Solace Women’s Aid are set to commence their strike in Tower Hamlets on February 14.
A representative from Solace noted that the organization is integrating various funding sources and is examining “redeployment opportunities,” while reaffirming its commitment to assisting survivors.
The Tower Hamlets Council stated that it has not suggested any changes to the funding provided to Solace.
The workers, who are part of the United Voices of the World (UVW) union, reported an overwhelming 100% approval for the strike following a 92% turnout in the vote.
The UVW indicated that the proposed cuts could reduce the team size by a third and cautioned that this would have a “devastating impact” on the individuals it serves.
This service offers complimentary support, advocacy, and referral services to high-risk domestic violence survivors.
From April to December 2024, Solace facilitated 1,139 referrals and provided support to 227 victims-survivors within the borough.
Isabel Cortés, assistant general secretary of UVW, stated that the strike aims to “preserve services in the long term.”
“Our members will not remain passive while jobs are eliminated and survivors are denied the necessary support,” she remarked.
“They have opted for indefinite strike action, demonstrating their resolve to advocate for all victims and survivors in Tower Hamlets.”
A spokesperson for Solace emphasized that the organization is engaging with staff regarding the consolidation of different funding streams.
“Solace will endeavor to explore redeployment opportunities, in which we have a strong history of success,” they mentioned.
“Solace is committed to working collaboratively and constructively with all parties involved, including our staff, the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and staff representatives.”
A representative for Tower Hamlets Council added, “We contract Solace to deliver specialized support to domestic abuse victims, which is a crucial resource for our community.
“No alterations have been made to the funding that the council allocates for these essential services, nor are any changes currently suggested.
“Solace operates independently, and we do not possess the authority to dictate their internal operations.
“We are in discussions with Solace to fully grasp the potential effects of any proposed changes on local service delivery and have reached out to United Voices of the World to address the significant concerns they have raised.”
