An environmental advocate initiating a clean-up initiative across the UK has emphasized that addressing climate change involves personal accountability rather than merely advocating for governmental interventions.
Vivek Gurav, 29, hailing from Wembley in north-west London, has launched a “plogging” campaign that spans 50 cities, combining jogging with litter collection.
His plogging journey began in India, and he has previously undertaken a similar effort in the UK.
Although Mr. Gurav supports activist movements like Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion, he believes in approaching the climate emergency through hands-on efforts.
Having relocated to the UK to pursue a Master’s degree in environmental policy and management, he expressed a desire for “more individuals to be actively involved in addressing this challenge.”
“Rather than just voicing complaints, if people engage in picking up litter or participating in biodiversity conservation, it fosters a deeper connection to natural spaces.”
He added, “Disruptive protests can sometimes imply a denial of personal responsibility for our environment, placing all the blame on government actions, which I believe is a limited perspective.”
Mr. Gurav is reaching out to university organizations, non-profits, and local communities, inviting them to participate in his cause.
“The plogging movement is gaining momentum, aiming to unite those ready to take proactive steps in their own lives.
“Even simple actions can lead to a significant ripple effect.”
