Five Design Teams Chosen to Honor Grenfell Tower Victims: Community Collaboration at Heart of Memorial Selection

The organizers of the project have selected five design teams to create a memorial honoring the victims of the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission, in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects, received over 25 submissions for the memorial’s design.

Co-chairs Thelma Stober and Lord Boateng expressed their desire for the local community to engage in the selection of the design team and play a role in shaping the memorial.

On June 14, 2017, a devastating fire in west London claimed the lives of 72 individuals.

According to the Memorial Commission, the design teams that have advanced to the shortlist are:

These teams will undergo a second round of assessment, during which they will engage with bereaved families, survivors, and residents of the Grenfell Tower area.

A final team is anticipated to be chosen by the summer, with plans to submit for planning approval by late 2026.

The ten community representatives of the Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission noted that moving towards a shortlist is a significant step in manifesting the community’s vision.

“We aim to select and appoint a design team that is not only highly skilled but also has a history of working on sensitive and community-oriented projects, ensuring that they will approach the important task of designing a respectful and beautiful memorial with the utmost integrity.

“Our 72 loved ones and the community deserve nothing less than this.”
