Drama Unfolds in Lewisham: High Street Reopens After Prolonged Knife Incident

Residents have been permitted to return to their homes following an incident involving a man wielding a knife in an apartment situated above shops in south-east London.

Videos shared on social media on Monday depicted the man hanging out of a third-floor window with what seemed to be a kitchen knife, as well as brandishing it inside the premises on Lewisham High Street.

Armed officers from the police were present near the apartment during the situation.

The Metropolitan Police reported they received a call around 10:45 GMT on Monday and that officers entered the location shortly before 02:00 GMT today. A man was apprehended and subsequently taken to a hospital, according to the police.

The Met had previously indicated that it did not think anyone else was in the apartment at the time.

The high street was cordoned off for much of the afternoon, but Lewisham Council confirmed via a post on X that all barriers had now been removed.

An HSBC branch across the street temporarily shut down as a precaution, though the bank stated that no customers or employees were affected.
