Dangerous Inmate Convicted of Multiple Attacks on Officers, Faces Sentencing for Attempted Murder Charges

An inmate has been found guilty of launching a series of assaults using homemade plastic weapons against prison staff.

Aklakar Rahman, aged 38, targeted personnel at HMS Swaleside in Kent and the high-security Belmarsh prison in south London during September and October 2022, as revealed in court at the Old Bailey.

He was already serving a life sentence for previous attacks within the prison system after being incarcerated for Class A drug offenses in 2015.

Prosecutor Alistair Richardson described Rahman as a “highly dangerous individual.”

Throughout the latest trial, he acknowledged five counts of attempted wounding.

The jury convicted him on four additional, more serious charges of attempted murder.

Rahman also confessed to six attempted assaults on emergency responders and three counts of possessing sharpened plastic items while incarcerated.

The court heard that he had frequently articulated his intent to kill prison officers, whom he referred to with a derogatory term for non-Muslims, “kuffar.”

Mrs. Justice McGowan has postponed sentencing until 28 March.
