New Era for Catford: Goldsmiths University to Transform Old Town Hall into Creative Campus

The Old Town Hall in Catford, southeast London, is set to become a new campus for Goldsmiths, University of London.

Goldsmiths’ Fine Art and Design department is seeking a new venue after its current location at the previous Lewisham College site must be vacated by July 2027.

The council described this development as a “significant partnership agreement.”

Staff and services located there will transition to other venues, including a different building in the town center, as stated by the local authority.

Mayor of Lewisham Brenda Dacres and the Cabinet are anticipated to officially endorse the plans on Wednesday, January 21.

Mayor Dacres remarked: “This is a strong illustration of what can be achieved through enduring collaboration.

“Establishing Goldsmiths in the heart of Catford is not merely about creating a new campus; it’s about embedding creativity, education, and opportunities within our town center.”

She further noted: “Through our joint efforts, we are laying the groundwork for Catford’s prosperity: bolstering local enterprises, drawing in new visitors, and creating avenues for residents to engage with one of the UK’s premier creative institutions.

“This represents a significant advancement in our vision for Catford as a vibrant community for living, working, studying, and enjoying leisure time.”

Goldsmiths is anticipated to sign a 10-year lease with Lewisham Council, with preparations to adapt the Old Town Hall for university use commencing later this year.

This transition is part of a broader regeneration initiative in Catford town center, following the council’s recent opening of a new pub called The Catford House in late 2025.

Additionally, this year will kick off the development of over 100 affordable housing units at Thomas’ Lane Yard, which is an underutilized parking area situated north of Catford Broadway.

This extensive regeneration project will also incorporate green public spaces, as well as commercial and affordable workspaces on the same premises.
